This is the short story version of the musical play and the movie. It's the original form of the story. Well-written, touching, provacative, interesting and fun. I love the movie version (with Olivia de Haviland, Rosano Brazzi, George Hamilton and Yvette Mimieux) which is almost word for word like the short story but with the added benefit of being shot on locaton in gorgeous Italy! Also loved the soundtrack.Opt for the movie version or try both!.Tags : Light in the Piazza [Elizabeth Spencer] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. NY 1960 first edition. A perfectly nice little story, well written. I confess I don't quite understand why this book is considered such a gem, as it seems pretty much like an extended short-story one might find in Redbook or a similar women's mag. A young lady who is limited in intellect, a mother who wants her happily paired, an enraptured Italian, some family play. Liked it though!
I love this book. It is sweet, and it is about wonderful Italy.
The story told is unusual, not entirely believable, but very romantic.
Thank you for your prompt delivery of the book.
This is a clever novella, with a clever title, that is the right length for what it has to say. There is exactly the correct amount of descriptive language, characterization and story-line to make for a very enjoyable read. The bit of humor, namely the confusion about age, is unexpected and delightful.
How nice for the author to have this novella find its way onto Broadway quite some time after it was written.
I knew the story from having seen the musical years ago. Still the writing made this a worthwhile reading experience. There was a rather shocking surprise towards the end which I felt was handled brilliantly by the author - she didn't mislead us in any way, and in fact there were some clues along the way [time wasn't making sense to me] - it wasn't a loud "OMG", but rather a quiet "Oh, I see, yes that makes perfect sense." I am drawn to Florence and Venice (dream destinations) so the setting was an attraction, and the author's description of the city betrays her affection for Florence. This isn't on the same level as "A Room with a View," but it's an engaging story well told.
