Synopsis: It is the last day in June, and seven year old Karen Brewer is having fun with her best friends Hannie Papadakis and Nancy Dawes. Karen is enjoying the smell of roses, and cutting them from her mother's vines to decorate the house. Karen and her friends are really excited to start going to Farm Camp at Mrs. Stone's barn the following day, where Kristy, her step-sister would be one of the counselors. After Karen and her brother Andrew go to her father's house for the month, Karen takes off to Farm Camp. She meets quite a lot of her friends from her class there, and enjoys the tour of the farm that Mrs. Stone gives them. Mrs. Stone shows them the vegetable garden, and later takes them inside the barn. In the barn, Karen meets Oliver Twist, otherwise known as Ollie, a soft and fuzzy orphaned lamb. Karen plays with Ollie the whole day, and later, Mrs. Stone tells them that the county fair is coming to Greenvale, a nearby town, and they would spend their last day of camp at the fair. She encourages each student to form groups and enter in the contests at the fair, such as completing a needlework project for the handicraft contest, working on the recipe for the baking contest, or raising vegetables for the produce contest. Karen finally decides to enter Ollie in the livestock contest because she likes him so much, but Mrs. Stone warns her that Ollie is not the kind of lamb they look for in the contest, but Karen insists, and Mrs. Stone eventually agrees. Karen plays with Ollie all the time, but she really does not train him in anyway. She also starts feeding him more than he has, and this later leads to trouble when she hears that Mrs. Stone has had trouble sleeping because Ollie starts yelling in the middle of the night for food. Karen also starts to feel left out in the camp because everyone is working in groups on interesting projects, and she feels that she has no one to spend time with. Can she train Ollie in time for the contest?
After a while, Karen also gets a surprise phone call from her friend Tia from Nebraska, saying that she wants to visit Karen for a few days. Karen is happy to hear the good news and invites her friend to stay with her family. Karen decides to take Tia to Farm Camp with her, but Tia is not really interested in going outside or being in Farm Camp. Karen later realizes that Tia wanted to see the town and the stores since she cannot see any of those things back in her farm where she lives. Can Karen make it up to Tia and show her a good time around Stoneybrook?
Review: I thought this was a nicely written book, but I felt that the story could have been written better. I felt that Karen really did not do anything responsible at camp, or work hard in any way to win the contest. She was too busy going to the other groups to see how they were doing, rather than working hard. I felt that if the author had shown how responsible and how much fun Karen had with training Ollie, this would have been a good example for young children to follow. Although the livestock contest turned out to be more realistic in nature, I still felt that Karen should have worked more at camp rather than just looking at what the others were doing.
However, I did enjoy the storyline with Karen and Tia, more than the Camp contest part of the story. It was nice to see Tia finally tell Karen how she was feeling and why she was sad, rather than just listening to what Karen had to say. Some parts that stood out in this book for me were when Karen finally shows Tia a good time at Stoneybrook and towards the end if the groups won the various contests or not. As always, the illustrations by Susan Tang add beautifully to the book, and I enjoyed looking at the ones where Karen, Hannie and Nancy are picking out the roses from her mother's garden, when Tia is having a good time in New York and when Karen and Tia hug each other at the airport in the end.
Overall, I thought this was an interesting book, but felt that it could have been written better, but nevertheless, it is somewhat a good addition to the Little Sister series.
