I love this story, They could've saved alot of heartache if they would've just talked to each other.
This another GREAT story from Lili. Will and Hailey are another great fun couple from this author.. read it you won't be disappointed.
This series is a guilty pleasure of mine. It had all the elements I enjoy in a romance

The Dom/sub thing surprised me. Guess I should've read the "about this book" before blithely purchasing the next in the series.

The point where Hailey noped out, I was totally on board with her viewpoint. Not so much the later developments.
Even though I know precisely jack squat about hockey, I LOVE these books. For this one I went in completely blind. Just pre-ordered and dove in once it landed on my kindle. No regrets! It's a sweet, laugh out loud romcom, but also a sweet, tender, meaningful read. It brought about to many giggles, but there were also moments when I gasped in surprise or had a little lip tremble going on.
Overall, it was the best Lili Valente book I've read. But only because she just keeps getting better and better with every story she weaves.
This was an ok read for me. I loved the story line. They were together four years before breaking up. Will was into the Dom/sub scene before Hailey and put that life behind him for her. She didn’t know about this past life and when she finds out she breaks up with him thinking she’s too “Vanilla” for him. Fast forward one year later. Hailey decides to seek outside help to educate herself to see if she can be a sub and win Will back.

I loved that she wanted to try and educate herself to see if the lifestyle could be for her but I hated Will’s approach. He is completely in love with her and never stopped but he tries to keep it just sex between them at first instead of having a more intimate connection, something they both miss and crave. I get he’s committed to teaching her the Dom/sub ways but I think they had a strong relationship to begin with and they could have incorporated his lifestyle slowly into it as opposed to it being all or nothing.

I find I either LOVE the ones in this series or they are just ok. I will still read others.
This one was only okay for me.

Pros I liked Will and Hailey. I liked that Will was crazy about Hailey and had no doubts about that, pretty much ever. And I could honestly see Hailey's reaction when she realizes that Will has this past, and this predilection, that he never shared with her. The phrasing 'vanilla sex' would make you question the solidity of your relationship.

Cons I didn't really get into the power exchange stuff, and not for the reasons you might think. It honestly wasn't the kinky sex that bugged me. It was fairly tame in the grand scheme of things, and Will was cool about consent and boundaries. It was more the emotional aspects of the dom/sub relationship that didn't work for me rather than what they actually did in bed. What is empowering about consistently submitting to someone's rules? ie, be on your knees in your underwear when I get home or I'll punish you? Slightly rough dirty sex is one thing but the psychology of domination doesn't make sense to me.

I tried to get my head around it. For example, Valente has Hailey reflect on why she liked it. Hailey articulates to Will that there is something reassuring about knowing there are boundaries (set by him), saying it made her feel safe to know what to expect if she breaks the rules there are consequences. But to me this just reeks of patriarchy and traditional values. For example, what if Will said he wanted Hailey to embrace a traditional division of labor and household authority, where he goes out and works and has the final say in what happens at home, while her job is to basically stay home and acquiesce to her partner's desires? This is also a socially sanctioned model of gender roles that is still common in some parts of the US, and I can imagine that it could feel "comforting" to abide by those rules. You're a "real woman" when you submit to your husband and maintain a tidy house and devote yourself to your kids and only your kids. But is this the model of a relationship I want to read about? No. It sounds authoritarian to me.

I guess my issue is that although Will used the language of "games" and "scenes", the dom/sub thing seemed pervasive. It wasn't just the occasional sex-play, it was the idea that he wanted control the psychology of their sex life (if Hailey would allow it), and that Hailey wanted him to. The occasional acting out of fantasies-- for example role-playing being a good girl gone bad and a little mild spanking-- is one thing. But to have your sex life built around this structure of dominance/submission dynamic doesn't really do it for me. If Will had been a sub and wanted to be dominated, then that could have been far more interesting. Or if Hailey had just said "I can't do this," and they had communicated about why Will liked being a Dom and worked through it to create a new happy ending, that could also have been emotionally interesting. But as written, it just left me feeling a bit meh.
